The Hidden Cost of Self-Sabotage
How my drive cost me what mattered most
TL;DR: Self-sabotage isn’t laziness or weakness — it’s a pattern your brain learned to protect you. I spent years running on three patterns I couldn’t see: the Controller, the Hyper-Achiever, and the Stickler. They helped me win at work. They ended up costing me everything else. Here’s what I learned, what it cost me, and how to spot it in yourself.
The Edge I Thought Was My Strength
There was a time when I thought my edge was my strength.
I was driven. Focused. Relentless.
In sales, that worked. I hit numbers. Led teams. Won deals.
But under the hood? I was running on three patterns I didn’t see.
I didn’t know they had names. I just thought it was “how I was wired.”
Turns out, I was wired for winning — and losing at the same time.
What I Lost
Performance
As a seller and sales leader, I pushed hard. I chased the win. I checked the dashboards. I fixed what others missed.
It looked like excellence.
But here’s what it really did:
I worked longer than needed.
I carried pressure alone.
I made simple things complex.
I confused motion with progress.
Performance went up. Peace went down. Energy drained faster than it should have.
I was winning on paper. But I was paying a tax I couldn’t see.
Relationships
At home, it was more subtle.
I wanted things “right.” Schedules tight. Standards high.
I thought I was leading. Most of the time I was just tense.
My kids didn’t need a high achieving SaaS bro... They needed a present dad.
My wife didn’t need a fixer, rescuer, or a hero. She needed a partner.
Control can look like care. Perfection can look like love.
But love feels different, softer, kinder...
When I was stuck in those patterns, I was less patient. Less open. Less fun and more fun at the same time… partying with the wrong people!
That’s a hard truth.
Wellbeing
You can win on paper and lose inside.
Self-sabotage shows up in the body:
Tight chest
Short breath
Poor sleep
Fast thoughts
It steals joy first. Then it steals a more if you’re not careful… I wasn’t.
I lost time. Energy. Money. Focus.
Not all at once. Just a little each day.
Five minutes of tension becomes five hours of stress.
You may know this feeling. I lived with it for years and it wrecked me and my marriage!
The Three Patterns Running Me
Once I started paying attention, I could finally name what had been driving me for years.
The Controller — I needed things my way. If I wasn’t in charge, I was uncomfortable. Delegation felt like risk. Trust felt like exposure.
The Hyper-Achiever — My worth was tied to results. Good quarter? I’m good. Bad quarter? I’m bad. The scoreboard ran my self-esteem.
The Stickler — Close was never good enough. There was always something to fix, improve, tighten. The voice that said “not quite” never rested.
At first, these traits looked like strengths.
The Controller got things done.
The Hyper-Achiever hit targets.
The Stickler caught mistakes.
Over time, my quiet blockers became LOUD.
The Hyper-Achiever told me, “You’re only as good as your last quarter.”
The Controller said, “If you want it done right, do it yourself.”
The Stickler whispered, “Not good enough.”
That voice never rests and it’s exhausting AF.
What Self-Sabotage Really Is
Self-sabotage is not laziness. It’s not weakness.
It’s a pattern your brain learned to protect you.
It feels smart. It feels safe. It feels “just how I am.”
And it costs you.
The silent tax is real:
Time — spent on things that don’t move the needle
Energy — drained by tension and overthinking
Money — lost opportunities, delayed decisions
Trust — eroded by control and perfectionism
Most people don’t fail from lack of skill. They struggle from patterns they can’t see.
Takes 3 minutes. Instant results. 100% free.
The Turning Point
On February 1, 2024, I was let go after a false PIP and months of chaos.
Old (younger) Mike D would have reacted with anger and a few “eff” bombs if you know what I mean… 🤬💣💥
Controller would fight.
Hyper-Achiever would prove.
Stickler would blame.
Instead, something different happened…
I slowed down. I saw the patterns.
And I realized: the job wasn’t the real threat. My patterns were.
That moment led to ResultsLab.io, to ResultsOS, and it led to this work.
Not from rage. From awareness.
The Good Great News
These patterns are not your identity. They’re behaviors.
And behaviors can change.
When I learned to spot my Controller, I paused instead of pushed.
When I caught my Hyper-Achiever, I reminded myself: “I am enough without the scoreboard.”
When I noticed my Stickler, I asked: “Is this excellent… or just ego?”
Simple awareness changed everything.
Not overnight. But steadily.
Why This Matters Now
Leaders are tired. Parents are stretched. Sellers are under pressure.
High performers carry a lot.
Most don’t fail from lack of skill. They struggle from patterns they can’t see.
That’s the work. Not more hustle. More awareness.
You can be driven and calm.
Focused and kind.
Ambitious and present.
You can win at work and at home.
It starts with seeing what’s been running you.
A Simple Reflection
Before you move on, sit with these three questions:
Where do I push too hard?
Where do I need control?
When is “not good enough” running the show?
Notice without judgment. That’s step one.
The Invitation
If this hit home, take the next step.
I have a simple self-sabotage assessment — not to label you, but to help you understand yourself.
When you see your patterns clearly, you can:
Improve performance without burning out
Strengthen relationships without fixing everyone
Protect your wellbeing without slowing down
Takes 3 minutes. Instant results. 100% free.
You don’t need to become someone new.
You just need to remove what’s in the way.
And that changes everything.

What is self-sabotage?
Self-sabotage is a pattern of thoughts, emotions, or behaviors that work against your own goals — often without you realizing it. It’s not laziness or weakness. It’s a protection mechanism your brain learned early in life that no longer serves you. Common self-sabotaging patterns include perfectionism, people-pleasing, procrastination, and hyper-achievement.
What are the signs of self-sabotage?
Signs of self-sabotage include:
Working harder than necessary but feeling stuck
Tying your self-worth to external results
Difficulty delegating or trusting others
Chronic stress, poor sleep, or burnout
Strained relationships despite good intentions
Feeling like “close” is never good enough
If you’re winning on paper but losing inside, self-sabotage may be running in the background.
What causes self-sabotage?
Self-sabotage is typically rooted in early life experiences where certain behaviors helped you survive, succeed, or stay safe. Over time, these patterns become automatic. Common drivers include fear of failure, fear of success, imposter syndrome, and a need for control. The good news: these are learned habits — and habits can change.
How do I stop self-sabotaging?
Stopping self-sabotage starts with awareness. You can’t change what you can’t see. Key steps include:
Spot the pattern — Name your saboteurs (e.g., Controller, Hyper-Achiever, Stickler)
Shift your response — Pause before reacting; choose a different action
Sustain the change — Build daily habits that reinforce new patterns
Coaching accelerates this process by providing accountability, structure, and an outside perspective.
What is mental fitness?
Mental fitness is your capacity to respond to life’s challenges with a positive mindset rather than a reactive one. It’s the ability to intercept negative thought patterns (like self-doubt, judgment, or anxiety) and shift to clearer, calmer thinking. Mental fitness is built through consistent practice — similar to physical fitness.
How is mental fitness different from mental health?
Mental health refers to your overall psychological wellbeing — including conditions like anxiety, depression, or trauma. Mental fitness is about building the mental muscles to handle stress, setbacks, and pressure more effectively. Think of it this way: mental health is the baseline; mental fitness is the optimization.
What is ResultsOS™?
ResultsOS™ is a personal operating system for high performers. Created by Mike D’Angelo at ResultsLab.io, it combines behavior science, mental fitness, and high-performance habits into a simple framework. ResultsOS helps you optimize five key areas — Growth, Relationships, Energy, Alignment, and Time (GREAT) — using the FASTER execution model.
Who is coaching for?
Coaching is for anyone who wants great results faster. ResultsLab.io works with sales leaders, founders, executives, entrepreneurs, and ambitious professionals. It’s also for parents, mid-career professionals navigating transitions, and anyone feeling stuck, burned out, or ready to level up.
Who is coaching NOT for?
Coaching is not for people looking for hacks, shortcuts, or quick fixes. It’s not for those who avoid accountability or aren’t willing to do the work. If you want someone to tell you what you want to hear, this isn’t for you.
How long does coaching take to see results?
Most clients start seeing shifts within the first 2–4 weeks. Meaningful, lasting change typically takes 3–6 months. The average coaching engagement at ResultsLab.io lasts one year because sustainable transformation takes time and reinforcement.
How much does coaching cost?
Individual coaching at ResultsLab.io ranges from $1,000 to $25,000 depending on the depth and format (1:1 vs. group). Group coaching is more affordable; 1:1 coaching offers deeper personalization. Corporate programs are also available.
