Here’s what really happens when you lose control.

Something you were counting on falls through. A deal, a reply, an invitation, a promotion or conversation. Whatever it was, didn’t happen as expected.

Then your heart rate increases. Your stomach drops. That’s your body signaling your brain. The event “feels like” danger, even if nothing dangerous is actually happening. That’s just how humans are built, to survive. There’s a stimulus then an automatic physiological reaction.

Then your mind starts racing, reaching and grabbing, trying to make sense of what just happened.

“What did I miss? What can I do? Who can I call?”

That part’s useful for about thirty seconds. Then it turns into replaying the same five minutes on a loop. OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!

“I failed.” “This is my fault.” “This is going to get worse.” “This says something about me.”

None of that is fact. It’s just your brain filling in a blank because it can’t stand not knowing. And when that story is the one running the show, here’s what happens next. Usually one of four things.

You push harder. More checking, more effort, more control over whatever’s still in reach. Even if it’s the wrong thing.

You get busy somewhere else. New project, new distraction, anywhere but here.

You go blank. Nothing gets decided. You just stall.

You smooth it over. Reassure someone, over-accommodate, try to make the discomfort go away by managing how other people feel.

Four different potential reactions to the same event. Everybody reacts differently depending on the situation. Your body’s alert system is trying to end the not-knowing as fast as it can. This reaction is typical because the alert signal is sending an automatic message, like a smoke alarm for a pan on a hot stove.

The part that most people miss, the feeling isn’t coming from the event. It’s coming from the story you told yourself the second it happened. “I’m an idiot. I should have been more careful, watched the pan. I should have turned on the exhaust fan. I knew the pan was too hot.” Next thing you know, you are tending to the smoke alarm and not removing the pan from the hot stove!

The reaction is fast and automatic, like a knee-jerk, often running on the false story.

A response looks different and feels different from a reaction.

Same stimulus, same alarm, same racing mind. And somewhere in between, in the Response Gap, that small space between what happened and what you do next, you interrupt the story before it runs the show. You ask what’s really true and what’s needed now. Often the facts are more useful than the false story. The pan is still hot. Move the pan. That’s it. Not “I’m an idiot,” just “the pan is still hot.” One sentence gets you to the stove. The other one keeps you standing at the smoke alarm, waving the towel.

Two people can experience the exact same thing: the same conversation, the same market conditions, the same competitive threats, the same missed quota, the same plan and goal, the same moment with their kid. With the exact same outcome, BUT walk away with two totally different feelings, because one of them tied their worth to the result, and the other one didn’t.

So what really happens isn’t about losing control at all. It’s about the sense that you have. What you are thinking, feeling, and doing.

You can’t control the event or situation. You can choose to react, fast and automatic, or respond, slower and more intentional.

The Response Gap is the space where awareness and choice live. Everything before it is just your physiology doing its job. Everything after it depends on what you do with the space in between.

Here’s the universal pattern

When you sense you’re losing control, here’s what tends to happen. Doesn’t matter if it’s a big deal or a small one, the pattern looks the same. Often it starts in your head and moves all over your body, and both of those impact your mood and then your actions.

You replay it, looking for the exact moment you could’ve fixed it. Like rewinding a video that won’t change no matter how many times you watch it.
You jump straight to the worst case. One late text becomes an accident. One weird look from your boss becomes getting let go.
You run “what if” loops about things that already happened, and things that haven’t happened yet, like your brain can’t tell the difference.
You look for someone to blame, including yourself, just so the whole thing has an owner.

And it moves all over your body and impacts your mood. You know that:

Dread sitting in your stomach while you wait to find out. You check your phone every few minutes even though nothing’s changed since the last time.
A flat, stuck feeling if it goes on long enough. Nothing feels worth starting.
Frustration that leaks out sideways. You snap at your kid over socks on the floor, and it was never really about the socks.
Tight chest, shallow breathing, staring at the ceiling at 2 a.m.

Then it shows up, sometimes in the worst possible way, in your actions:

You cling tighter on stuff that doesn’t even matter, the dishes, your inbox, the thermostat, just to feel like you’re steering something.
You ask the same person the same question three different ways, hoping a different answer shows up.
You scroll, you snack, you find a task that isn’t the task. Anything that isn’t sitting with it.
You vent to whoever will listen, even if they’ve already heard this exact story twice.
On the good days, you catch yourself and shift to what you can do, instead of the part you can’t.

The truth is, not knowing is harder to sit with than a bad answer you already know. So people trade peace of mind for a false sense of control. Obsessing, over-preparing, checking one more time. Anything except just sitting with the ambiguity.

So what does this mean to me?

Here’s the honest answer.

If your results aren’t matching your effort, that’s the work I do, with people just like you. Founders. Leaders. High achievers. People in sales. Parents. Anyone carrying a lot of responsibility and ambition. The common thread: you’ve been told, or you believe, it’s an execution problem. So the solution becomes do more, try harder, get sharper.

But burnout and feeling stuck were never the real problem. It’s the wrong diagnosis and treatment plan.

We don’t treat the surface. We get to the root. Simply said, you cannot control something that’s out of your control. Knowing this allows you to stop approaching your stress like a to-do list problem, because it never was. It’s something deeper. Understanding this is an immediate relief. That’s the kind of straight talk you’re getting from me, starting right now.

And why this matters to you:

If you’re a founder or a leader, that burnout is from over-controlling things that were never going to bend anyway. This explains it without asking you to just work less.

If you’re in sales or leading a sales team, that tension is from living inside a quota, number, or metric that isn’t fully yours. This gives you permission to loosen up on the close, and real language for what to manage instead.

If you’re a high achiever, this is the first version of this that doesn’t ask you to want less. Keep the ambition. Just stop tying your worth to something you don’t fully steer.

If you’re a parent, guilt is the thing keeping you up at night, and this hands you a real way out of it without asking you to care less.

And if you’re just living your life, nobody’s ever handed you anything like this before. This is the first time the pattern behind your money worry, your health scares, or that low hum of stress got named as one thing, instead of a pile of separate problems.

Underneath all five, it’s the same story. Your responsibility is bigger than your span of control. That puts you in good company, basically every adult trying to do something that matters. It’s rarely named as one thing. Most advice picks an audience, a lane, or a problem. This is the one thing underneath all three, at once.

Why is this still a problem?

Good question. Here’s why.

The usual advice is “let go of what you can’t control.” True. Also pretty vague. Nobody ever shows you how people get stuck in the first place. So the advice doesn’t stick. Sounds nice for five minutes. Then life happens and you’re right back where you started.

Then there’s this. Everyone treats it like a different problem depending on where you’re standing. A leadership book has one version. A sales book has its version. Then there’s the business book version. A parenting book has another. Nobody ever says, “hey, this is the exact same thing.” So you think your situation is the special case. And the advice never quite feels like it applies to you.

And if you’re a high achiever, there’s one more thing working against you. This advice sounds like it’s asking you to try less. Nobody wants to hear that. So you tune it out before you even give it a shot. But it was never about trying less. It’s about aiming what you’ve got at the right target.

Here’s what happens if you continue to ignore it.

It gets worse, not better.

When you want to control the outcome, but can’t, the typical reaction is to hold on tighter to everything else. More hours. More checking. More worrying. None of that fixes anything, because the thing you’re worried about was never in your control to begin with. So the stress just builds.

At work, that stress leaks onto your team, whether you mean it to or not. People start carrying the same tension, even if they can’t say why.

At home, your kids feel it too. The tighter you hold on, the more they either shut down or push back.

And over time, it just wears you out. You can be winning on paper and still feel empty inside, because the finish line keeps moving and nothing ever actually settles the worry underneath it.

Holding on tighter doesn’t fix uncertainty. It just makes you tired.

Real life examples of how this show up on the daily.

Tired of what, exactly? Let’s make it real. Here’s how this actually shows up, for five different people you might recognize, with the full breakdown one click away.

If you’re leading a company, organization, team, or group: you’re the one people look to when nobody knows what’s happening. Funny thing is, half the time, you don’t know either. You just can’t let it show. What good leaders do instead is get clear on the difference between what they’re accountable for and what they truly control, then say that difference out loud to their team.

If you’re in sales or leading a sales team: you “own” a number. A quota. A plan you’re on the hook to deliver. Do you own it, or does it own you? The best sales leaders move the team’s identity off the number and onto the behaviors that actually matter, better discovery, clear next steps, honest qualifying.

If you’re a high achiever: your whole identity got built on being able to control outcomes through effort, so when effort stops guaranteeing the result, it doesn’t just feel frustrating, it feels like a threat to who you are. The difference is in the details, and it was never about wanting less. It’s the fear underneath the ambition.

If you’re a parent: congratulations, you officially have the hardest job on the planet. No title. No promotion. No bonus. No corporate trip. Just showing up again tomorrow, whether anyone claps or not. You’re responsible to them and for them, up to a point. You were never responsible for who they become.

If you’re just living your life: call it the quiet majority. This was never a niche problem, a title problem, or a role problem. This is a human problem, and it runs here too, maybe harder, because there’s no framework around it to even help you name what’s happening.

Here’s what’s really at stake. Your performance, relationships, and your wellbeing.

The real life examples above were framed by who this happens to. A business leader, a seller, a parent, and everyone else just getting through any day that ends in Y, as in every day.

When you look at it from each perspective, can you see the other’s perspective? If you’re a leader, do you see the impact on the sellers, the individuals in the organization, and the parents too? The goal here is to widen everyone’s perspective. Because when you strip away the job title, role, or function, control has the same impact on everybody. From the boardroom to the boiler room and everywhere in between.

Here’s the part that makes it worse. Your reaction can trigger someone else’s. You push harder (what’s often called fight), and it can make someone else go quiet (flight). Someone goes blank (freeze), and it can push someone else to smooth everything over just to keep the peace (fawn). Everyone responds differently, and one person’s reaction becomes another person’s trigger. This is the exact dynamic running underneath every family, every team, every organization, whether anyone’s ever named it or not. The people who freeze are often the ones who end up with even more control placed on them, which deepens the freeze. Left alone, it can turn into a cycle that feeds itself.

Curious how this cycle actually plays out?

Trying to control the outcome impacts everyone’s performance, relationships, and wellbeing. And one level or layer deeper, you’ll see the direct impact equally on trust, respect, and kindness.

Performance

This one sounds backwards. Most people believe more control means better performance. It’s the exact opposite. Here’s why.

Teams do better when people feel safe to speak up. Safe to admit a mistake. Safe to ask a dumb question without getting punished for it. Not because safety feels nice. Because safe teams catch problems early. And problems caught early are easier to fix. When someone sits on a mistake for three extra days, they’re scared of how it’ll land. By the time it comes out, it’s a bigger mess than it ever needed to be.

Micromanaging makes performance worse. Trust, respect, and safety shrink quickly, and when that happens, the team may see what the problem is, but they don’t feel safe enough to speak up and share their perspective, which makes problems harder to fix.

Here’s the part people often confuse. Trust and high standards aren’t in conflict. A team can feel safe and still get pushed hard. Still get held to a real bar.

Safety was never about comfort. It’s the trust that pressure won’t turn into punishment. This is what drives performance at scale. Trust drives performance and relationships. And strong relationships built on trust fuel performance.

Relationships

Mutual trust and respect rapidly decline when we’re clinging to control. Here’s how holding on too tight shows up in relationships. A partner. A kid. Someone on your team. It rarely looks like control from the outside. It looks like losing respect.

Sarcasm. Correcting someone mid-sentence. The eye-roll that says I don’t trust you to handle this leads to contempt. And out of everything ever studied about why relationships fail, that pattern is the strongest predictor of all.

The fix isn’t just cutting the sarcasm out. It’s building something with purpose. Fondness. Admiration. Keeping it alive, the way you’d water a plant instead of just not stepping on it.

Trust and commitment aren’t the soft parts of a relationship. They are the essential ingredients for everyone to be seen, heard, acknowledged, and valued. When we all let go of the outcome, there’s more room for respect in every room. From the boardroom to the boiler room to the living room, and the bedroom.

Want to see this in everyday action? Look at the Whole-Life Check-In. The Partner, Family, and Friends lines are this exact idea. Nobody ever says trust or respect out loud in there.

“I lead with care in how I treat people.” That’s kindness, plain as it gets.

“Patient, present, and honest.” That’s fondness and admiration, just said simpler.

“I show up, even when it’s messy.” “Not just when it’s convenient.” Both about showing up when it’s inconvenient. And that’s exactly how trust gets built. Or worn down.

Wellbeing

When control hijacks you it keeps your body on a slow simmer, like that hot pan on the stove, just turned down low and left running. On edge. Scanning. Never fully off.

You wake up tired even after a full night’s sleep. You have a dull ache and you don’t know why. Keep that up long enough and that’s the road to burnout. Not one bad day. A slow wearing down.

The fix isn’t grinning and bearing it or trying harder. It’s treating yourself the way you’d treat a friend having a hard day. People who do that report less anxiety. Less mood swings. They bounce back faster from stress and “failure.”

And here’s the part that matters most if you’re ambitious. Being kind to yourself doesn’t make you want less. People who are kind to themselves work just as hard. Aim just as high. Kindness spurs growth when you are not afraid of falling short or failing. Kindness understands failing forward. Learning and growing every day.

All three, kindness, respect, and trust, increase your wellbeing. And wellbeing is what makes relationships stronger and performance possible.

When you focus on self-kindness, self-respect, self-trust, you don’t need to worry about control. This is the root nobody names out loud.

And when we get that part right, a different question starts showing up on its own: how do I want to show up for the people around me?

This is exactly where trust, respect, and kindness stop being things people say in the annual report, corporate values, or a wedding toast, and start being the actual mechanism running underneath everything else.

Simply put, people do better, across the board, when they get real choices and feel like they truly matter to the people around them. Take that away, tighten the reins, whether it’s a boss standing over your shoulder, a parent who won’t let go, or your own inner critic calling the shots before you’ve even had coffee, and your performance, your relationships, and your wellbeing all take the hit at the same time. Not one at a time. In one fell swoop.

From the top line to the bottom line, here’s the through-line

You already know this in your gut. Trust, respect, and kindness aren’t soft or optional. They’re what happens when you keep choosing what’s yours to own over the outcome you can’t control.

Every version of clinging. Command and control. Micromanaging. Hovering. Beating yourself up. Controlling someone you love. That’s what happens when that decision hasn’t been made yet.

Every version of the healthy pattern looks different. Being kind to yourself. Feeling safe enough to speak up. Being genuine, open, honest, and kind on purpose. That’s what it looks like once it has.

What life looks like on the other side of control

You still care. You still work hard. And you stop confusing “did I show up right” with “did it turn out right.” Those become two separate questions, and you can feel calm about the first one even while the second one’s still up in the air.

In real life, that looks like:

Doing the work, then letting it go instead of replaying it.
Resting without needing to earn it first.
Delegating without needing to check on everything.
Losing a deal, having a rough parenting day, missing a goal, and still feeling okay, because you know you showed up the way you meant to.
The anxiety doesn’t vanish completely. It just stops running the show.

How long does this take?

It’s not a one-time fix. It’s like any other habit you build. So the fix is consistency.

You can pick up the concepts and principles quickly. One or two solid conversations and it clicks for most people. “Oh, I’ve been holding onto the wrong thing.” That’s the quick part.

Actually living it takes a little longer. Depends on your daily practice, which is catching yourself in the moment, choosing to let go instead of holding on. That’s a skill you build over time, sometimes a few months. Because you’re working to rewire a response that was originally meant for survival, and that’s just how long it takes anyone to build a practice that lasts.

Fast to understand. Slower to root. Worth saying plainly, because it’s a lot more honest than pretending one good insight fixes a lifetime of holding on too tight.

Want something you can actually track, not just think about?

The Monthly Review’s Whole-Life Check-In is built for exactly this. Ten areas of your life, scored simply, once a month. Look closely at the actual language in it. Almost none of it asks how things turned out. Nearly all of it asks whether you showed up. That’s not an accident. It’s this same idea, already living in a tool you can start using today.

Living and walking this together

I spent over thirty years in sales and leadership before I built ResultsLab. I’ve carried a number that wasn’t fully mine to control more times than I can count.

Life outside of work hasn’t exactly gone according to plan either. I’ve been married, then unmarried, then remarried, after swearing up and down I’d never do that again. (Never say never, right?) These days I’m dad to two, and bonus dad to four more. I’m a grandparent too, they call me Pop D, and I love every minute of it. I’ve navigated the co-parenting waters. I’ve walked the ADHD and autism journey with my bonus family, right alongside them, not from the sidelines.

I’ve been the one everyone looked to for the answer, even on the days I didn’t have one myself. That’s not a bio line I’m trotting out to sound credible. That’s why I built this thing in the first place.

Here’s the thing though. You’re the one who actually closes the gap between “I get it” and “I actually live it.” Not me. I’m just your guide, walking beside you while you do the real part.

You probably already get the idea on your own, honestly, maybe just from reading this. That was never the hard part. The hard part is catching yourself in the moment, over and over, until the new habit actually sticks. And for that, you need somebody outside your own head. Somebody watching your patterns right alongside you, who isn’t afraid to call it out, in real time, while it’s actually happening.

That’s the real work. Not motivation. Not theory. It’s me helping you spot where you’re still holding onto the wrong things, in your days, your deals, your family, your week. Widening that Response Gap together, until letting go isn’t a big deal anymore. It’s just how you live now.

That’s the real difference between reading something and actually changing. Not “here’s an idea.” It’s “here’s someone in your corner who won’t let you slide back without noticing.”

One more thing, about the name

ResultsLab was never a promise about outcomes. Look at the name again. A lab doesn’t hand you a result on command. You control the inputs, run the process, and see what shows up after. That was the deal the whole time.

And a lab was never a solo word either. It’s a practice. Done with somebody else in the room. Read the full story behind the name →

Common questions about Control vs. Outcome.

What is the Response Gap? The space between something happening and what you do next. It’s where awareness and choice live. Everything before it, your body’s automatic reaction, is just physiology doing its job. Everything after it depends on what you do with that space. Read more →

What’s the difference between a reaction and a response? A reaction is fast and automatic, usually running on a false story your brain filled in because it couldn’t stand not knowing. A response is slower and more intentional, built on what’s actually true and what’s needed now, not on the scariest version of events.

Why can’t I control outcomes? Because outcomes were never fully yours to begin with, whether that’s a deal closing, a kid’s choices, or how a diagnosis turns out. What you actually control is your input: the effort, the decision, the follow-through, how you show up. Better inputs lead to better outputs, but not guaranteed ones.

What are the four reactions people have when they lose control? Pushing harder (more checking, more effort, holding onto whatever’s still in reach), getting busy somewhere else (distraction), going blank (freezing, deciding nothing), or smoothing it over (reassuring others, avoiding the discomfort). All four are the same nervous system trying to end uncertainty as fast as it can.

How long does it actually take to change this pattern? Understanding it can click in one conversation. Living it, catching yourself in the moment and choosing a response instead of a reaction, takes longer, usually weeks to a few months of practice. That’s consistent with actual habit-formation research, not the popular “21 days” myth, which was never based on real data.

Does control affect more than just my mood? Yes. The same holding-on-too-tight pattern that costs you peace of mind also costs you performance (safety and trust drive results more than control does), relationships (contempt is the strongest known predictor of relationship failure, and it usually shows up as a loss of respect, not obvious control), and wellbeing (staying tensed up keeps your body in a low-level stress state that leads to burnout over time).

Why you can’t control the outcome
