From one parent to another… this article is going to hit harder because we already carry a huge responsibility for caring for another human being. The weight, the guilt, the parental anxiety are real when wrestle with questions like “Why can’t I control my kid?” And the idea of “letting go” as a parent.
Understand this first, you’re NOT responsible for who they become. Fact, parenting is THE hardest job with the least recognition. Here’s the one thing that actually is yours to control. You’re responsible for showing up. Not for who they become. Here’s the difference, and why it actually makes you a better parent, not a worse one.
Here’s the short version of what’s actually happening when your kid does something that worries you, or doesn’t turn out the way you hoped. Something goes sideways, your body reacts before your brain catches up, and somewhere in the space right after, a story shows up. Some version of “I’m failing them” or “this is my fault.” That story is what decides whether you spiral into guilt or steady yourself enough to actually help.
If you’re a parent, congratulations. You officially have the hardest job on the planet.
Huge responsibility for another human’s life. Zero control over who they become. The most rewarding job there is, and some days, the most frustrating one too.
And if you’re doing this while raising a kid with a disability, autism, or ADHD. If you’re walking alongside your child as they figure out their own gender identity. If you’re doing it through a blended family, co-parenting across two households, or solo, with nobody else’s name on the lease. It’s not just twice as hard. It can be ten times harder, if you let it.
So why is this important to us?
We’ve been told, or you’ve just come to believe, that being a great parent means our kiddos turn out great, if we provide the right structure, love them well, and show up enough too. When they don’t, when they struggle anyway, that gets read as we’re a failure or a gap in how hard we tried.
It isn’t. The guilt that keeps you up at night was never the real problem. It’s the wrong diagnosis.
You see, you can’t control who they become. You never fully could, no matter how well you did your part. Their choices, their temperament, their path, none of that was ever completely in your hands. Once that actually lands, you can stop treating every rough patch like proof you’re failing, which it never was. Seeing that clearly is a relief, on its own, before anything else changes.
Why is this a parent problem still?
Because nobody ever wrote the version of this that admits parenting outcomes were never fully in your control.
Every parenting book promises that the right method produces the right kid. Every well-meaning relative has an opinion about what you’re doing wrong. So when your kid struggles anyway, despite you doing everything the books said, you either conclude you didn’t try hard enough, or that something’s uniquely wrong with your family.
Neither one is true. This is a real, recognizable pattern. It just never got named for parents before, because naming it means admitting the thing most parenting advice is afraid to say out loud: you were never fully in control of the outcome to begin with.
What happens if you continue to fight it or worse, ignore It
It gets worse, not better, and it doesn’t stay contained to just you.
The guilt gets heavier, and it starts leaking out sideways: more hovering, more control over the stuff you can control (activities, schedules, screen time) to compensate for the stuff you can’t. Here’s the part most people miss: your kiddo feels that hold tighten, even if you never say a word about it. It usually pushes them toward one of two places, complying just to keep the peace, or pulling away entirely.
How this actually shows up on the daily.
In your head, it sounds like this:
“If my kid struggles, I failed,” instead of “I did what I could, the rest was never fully mine to steer”.
One bad grade, one rough patch, turns into “this is the trajectory now”.
Crediting or blaming your parenting for things that are just temperament, timing, or kids being kids.
Comparing your family to other families as a stand-in for “am I doing this right”.
And it moves into your body and your mood too. You know that:
It’s a sharper kind of helpless than anything work throws at you. This is someone you love, not a deal or a quarter.
You lie awake replaying whether you were too hard on them at dinner. Or not hard enough.
A low hum of worry that never fully switches off, because this job has no clock-out time.
Every stage they outgrow is a tiny loss you never got a vote on. The car seat goes to storage. Nobody asked you.
Then it shows up in your actions, sometimes in the worst possible way:
You’ve got a folder of activities, tutors, screen time rules. All the stuff you can control, standing in for the stuff you can’t.
You fix the fight with their friend before they even finish telling you about it.
Venting to your partner or a friend, or going the other way and carrying it alone.
On the good days, shifting from “control the kid” to “control the environment and the relationship.” What you model. How safe it feels to come to you. How steady you are.
Parenting is as hard as it is rewarding. There’s no title for this job. No promotion. No bonus. No corporate trip. Limited job description: keep them safe, healthy, raise good humans, and show up again tomorrow, whether anyone claps or not.
You’re responsible to them, and for them, up to a certain point. You’re responsible for showing up, modeling, giving them structure and love. You’re not responsible for the outcome.
I know, I know. “But Mike, it is my responsibility.” “I don’t want to raise little a-holes.” I get it. I see and hear you and we can agree on the last one too.
Let’s acknowledge that head on with this clarification. While they’re young, you do have control, over their environment. What they eat, where they go to school, the rules of the house, the toys on the shelf. What you never have is control over who they become or the choices they make once they’re outside your direct supervision, in the school hallway, at a friend’s house, out in the world. That’s influence, not control, and it matters more as supervision shrinks with age. By the time they’re a legal adult, the environmental control is gone too. All that’s left is influence.
Let’s look at it this way. You can buy them a bike, with a horn or bell, a helmet, knee and elbow pads, training wheels too. You can teach them the rules of the road. How to be a safe rider. Teach them how to ride, but ultimately, when the training wheels come off, it’s up to them to ride the bike. To wear the helmet. To obey the rules of the road. Not yours. You can’t ride the bike for them.
Parents who can hold that line worry less and connect more. Not because they care less. Because they’ve stopped trying to ride a bike that was never theirs to ride.
One more thing: this doesn’t run in just one direction. Sometimes it’s a kid’s own anxiety that pulls a parent toward hovering more, not the hovering that causes the anxiety in the first place. Worth knowing before pointing the finger only one way.
What this really costs you.
This isn’t just about your own peace of mind. Left alone, this pattern costs you three specific things: how present you actually are with them, not just physically in the room. How much they trust you with the messy stuff, not just the good news. And your own rest, actual rest, not just the hours after they’ve finally fallen asleep. Those three don’t fall one at a time. They fall together, quietly, the same way they build together when this gets handled right.
What life looks like on the other side
You still worry when they’re struggling. That never goes away, and it shouldn’t. You still care intensely about who they become. That’s not going anywhere either, and it shouldn’t. Caring about your kid’s life was never the problem to fix.
What actually changes is this: you stop confusing “did I show up for them today” with “did they turn out exactly right.” Those were never the same question, even though it’s felt like one for a long time. You can have a hard parenting day, lose your temper, miss something important, and still know you’re not failing them. You showed up. That’s the part that was always yours.
You taught them to ride. You bought the helmet, the pads, the bike with the bell on it. You can’t ride it for them. That was never the deal, even on the days it feels like it should be.
Living and walking this together
